    • What is a tile adhesive?
      • A basic tile adhesive is made of cement, sand and special additives and is in a powder form. The powder is mixed with either water or Latex Admix (based on application) to a paste like consistency and used for fixing tiles/stone on different surfaces. The tiles are fixed with the tile adhesive in a thin bed using notched trowel. The tile adhesive is packed in moisture resistant paper bags.
    • Why to use tile adhesive?
      • Conventional cement sand does not have the necessary bonding properties to bond the different type of tiles available in varied sizes under different application conditions. Using a tile adhesive improves the bond strength to the substrate and helps tile installation faster. Use of tile adhesive would not require water curing unlike the conventional systems. The special polymers in the adhesives help in withstanding the thermal shocks and impacts which come on the surface of the tiles during use of tiled surfaces. There will not be hollow sounds from the tiles and hence no popping up of tiles from floors and walls. Fully bonded tiles ensure no water stagnations under them as there are no hollow spaces which are prevalent in conventional installation system with cement and sand.
    • Where can tile adhesives be used?
      • Tile adhesives can be used in new constructions and old constructed buildings (Tile on tile applications) to install variety of tiles or stones. Tile adhesives can be used in all such areas where tile/stone fixing is done such as floor/wall areas in residential buildings, commercial buildings, hospitals, industrial plants, swimming pools, external façade etc.
    • What are the different types of tile adhesives available in Laticrete?
      • Tile adhesives are broadly classified into two types:
1.Thick bed adhesive: suitable for application over un-leveled floors (More than 12mm thickness)
2.Thin bed adhesive: suitable for application over leveled floors (Upto 12 mm thickness)
3.Epoxy Adhesives: Suitable for installation of tiles over metals, Acrylic sheets, glass surfaces and FRP based stone veneers.
    • Thick bed adhesive:
      • It is a 2 component adhesive consisting of factory prepared thick bed powder and latex admix The powder and the admix are mixed in a defined ratio to form a thick bed adhesive of thickness 12mm or above.
It is suitable for installation of all types of ceramic tile, vitrified tile and natural stone on internal and external concrete floor.
    • Thin set adhesive:
      • Adhesive used with thickness up to 12mm is called a thin set adhesive. Thin set adhesives area also called dry set adhesives, Thin set mortars or dry set mortars. These adhesives are available with cement and epoxy base. Cement based adhesives area used when plaster, concrete, plywood, calcium silicate board, cement backer board or gypsum wall board is used as the base (substrate) to install the tile or stone. Epoxy thin set adhesive is used when metal, glass or acrylic sheets makes the base for the tiling. Variety of tiles like glass tiles, FRP based stone veneers, heavy industrial tiles can be installed using Epoxy adhesives over metals, plywood, Glass, Acrylic sheets etc.,
    • What is thin set adhesive:
      • It is a basic tile adhesive made of cement, sand and special additives and mixed with water to form a tile adhesive which is used with the bed thickness of 1mm to 12mm.
It has a better bonding and ease of application when compared to conventional cement sand system.
    • What is polymer modified adhesive:
      • It is single component tile adhesive in powder form consisting of cement, sand, special additives and polymers.
The powder need to be mixed with water to form a high strength adhesive specially suited for internal & external installation of natural stones like granite, marble, tiles like glass mosaic, ceramic, and vitrified tiles on plastered / screed / concrete substrates.
    • What is latex fortified adhesive
      • It is a 2-component tile adhesive consisting of adhesive powder and latex admix.
The powder and latex admix are mixed in a defined ratio to form a high strength and flexible adhesive.
Latex fortified adhesive are suitable for internal & external applications of ceramic tiles, vitrified tiles, natural stone etc over several surfaces such as cement plaster, plywood, gypsum board, cement backer board etc
    • What is epoxy adhesive
      • It is a 3-comp tile adhesive consisting of resin, hardener & filler packed in a factory prepared kit.
It is the strongest tile adhesive available and suitable for installation of industrial tile in highly chemical resistant and corrosive environment. Epoxy adhesives can be used for installation of tiles and stones on difficult substrates like Metals, Acrylic sheets, FRP sheets, Glass surfaces etc.,
It is also suitable for installation of moisture sensitive marble and agglomerates.
    • How does temperature and humidity affect open time?
      • Warmer temperatures will speed drying time and shrink the open time window. Colder temperatures will slow the drying time and will increase the open time window. Very low humidity will shorten the open time; very high humidity in combination with high temperatures can also shorten the open time.
    • What can cause a cracked tile?
      • Deflection of suspended slabHair-line or spider cracks in substrate Lack of movement jointsMovement or settlement of substrate Not enough thin-set on the back of the tile (tile not well bedded)
    • How can I prevent a cracked tile?
      • Checking the substrate for soundness and plumb before installation of tiles.
By using good quality thin set adhesive with 100% bonding of tile to substrate. Check the coverage as per the standard coverage chart with the given thickness of the thin set adhesive
Provision of spaces between the tiles and filling the spaces /joints with grouting material.
Checking the provision of expansion / movement joints as per standards
    • What can cause a loose tile?
      • 1. Deflection of suspended slab
        2. Hair-line or spider cracks in substrateLack of movement joints
        3. Lack of grout joints between the tiles leading to lippage and hence loose tiles with service loads
        4. Movement or settlement of substrate
        5. Substrate surface not cleaned
        6. Thin-set dried out before tile is laid
        7. Not enough thin-set on the back of the tile
        8. Kiln release or residue on back of tile
        9. Tile subjected to stress prior to recommended cure time
    • What can I do to prevent a loose tile?
      • Check the substrates for plumb and soundness as per required standards
Pre-treat cracks with crack filling materials before installation of tiles
Clean the back of the tiles before installation of tiles. Pre-wet the substrates before installation of tiles with cement based thin set adhesives
Check for expansion / movement / control joints. At no point of time the tile should be installed directly over these joints. The joints need be continued till the tile surfaces
Install tiles before the adhesive dries out after notching (skinning time)
Use right amount of thin set adhesive as specified by the manufacturer to maintain the right bed thickness
Provide joints between the tiles and fill them with right filling materials (grouts)
Allow traffic only after the recommended time period after installation of tiles and grout
    • What can cause a hollow sounding tile?
      • 1. Deflection of suspended slab
